As a small family run business it is important to us to work with other local trade professions and source materials locally. This not only allows for us to work efficiently, it also means that we are supporting other local businesses. Of course getting the best timber supplier is important in our trade and so we are very happy to recommend Northwood Forestry as our supplier of quality English Oak. Based in Washington West Sussex they have been established as specialists in English and European Oak for over 30  years. This Sussex Based saw mill has become one of the most reputable saw mills in Sussex, so if we are manufacturing something for you in Oak it may be from Northwood Forestry.

BONFIRE NIGHT AND FIREWOOD

WHEN CHOOSING WOOD TO BE BURNT ON A BONFIRE IT OFTEN SEEMS THAT ANYTHING THAT IS WANTED TO BE GOTTEN RID OF IS PLACED ON THE FIRE, OLD DOORS,GATES ETC. HOWEVER MOST BONFIRE SOCIETIES ARE VERY CAREFUL TO CHOOSE ITEMS THAT ARE FREE OF OLD FITTINGS AND IRONMONGERY.
THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FIRE OF ITSELF IS OF CAUSE A MUCH DISCUSSION AND LOTS OF FUN AS THE PILE OF TIMBER FOR BURNING ESCALATES. IT LOOKS AS THOUGH WE MAY BE IN FOR ANOTHER WET BONFIRE THIS YEAR (2016) SO FOR THOSE WITH DOGS OR NOT VENTURING OUT PERHAPS A HOME FIRE WILL DO, I FOR ONE SHALL BE TOASTING MY MARSHMALLOWS INDOORS. I HAVE INCLUDED SOME TIPS ON WHAT TO LOOK FOR TO GET THE MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY FROM YOUR INDOOR FIRE.

INDOOR FIRES, LOG BURNERS AND STOVES

When choosing wood there are two significant factors which have an effect on the calorific value (CV) or the amount of available heat per unit (volume) of fuel: Moisture content Wood density 1. Moisture content The moisture content of wood has by far the greatest effect on CV. Any water in the timber has to boil away before the wood will burn, and this will reduce the net energy released as useful heat (as opposed to steam up the chimney). If you can get them to light at all, logs that aren’t dry will result in a fire that smoulders and creates lots of tars and smoke. These tars can be corrosive, potentially damaging the lining of the flue and increasing the danger of a chimney fire. Wet logs will tend to blacken glass in stoves even if the stove is designed to keep the glass clean. Well seasoned logs can have approximately twice the CV of green logs. You should always take care to burn only dried (seasoned) wood, either by buying it dry, or by buying green logs and drying them yourself. Radial cracks and bark that comes off easily suggests well-seasoned wood.
